A Slice of Cake With... Helen Garraway

This week I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Helen Garraway.

(c) Jeff Krotz
Helen is the USA Today Bestselling author of the award winning epic  fantasy Sentinal series which was first published in 2020, followed by the  first book of the fantasy romance SoulMist series, SoulBreather, released in  2022 as part of the Realm of Darkness boxset.

An avid reader of many different fiction genres, a love she inherited from her  mother, Helen writes fantasy novels and also enjoys paper crafting and  scrapbooking as an escape from the pressure of the day job.

Having graduated from the University of Southampton with a Degree in  Politics and International Relations, she remains an active member of their  alumni.

What kind of books do you write?

I love to create immersive new worlds for my characters to battle through. Vibrant worlds of ancient myth and legend full of political intrigue, betrayal, and adventure. If you love rich characters drawn together to fight for what they believe in then check out the Sentinal series.

Can you describe your writing why?

I just love writing. All aspects from the first idea, to the drafting to the editing. Ideas for new characters and impossible situations bubble up in my mind all the time and I just have to stop and write them down. I’ll find a home for them somewhere!

Oh my goodness! This is so difficult!

There are so many scenes I love. The emotional scenes most of all. I love the scenes that make you laugh or cry, that bring out a strong reaction. Most of which of course are spoilers!

This is a scene from Book three, Sentinals Justice. Jerrol and Taelia and the evolution of their relationship is one of the most enjoyable arcs I have written.

It was much later when he came face to face with the pretty young scholar again. “Captain, do you have time for a dance? I know officers are usually kept busy.”

“Of course, my lady.”

“Call me Taelia, please.”

“As you wish. I am called Finn.” He swept her out onto the dance floor, his fingertips tingling.

She raised her face to his, smiling with pleasure. “You dance very well for a military man,” she said.

“A misspent youth no doubt,” he murmured, breathing in the scent of her hair. He relaxed at the familiar scent, the tension dissipating from his shoulders.

“We’ve missed you,” she said. “We have been patient, waiting as we promised.”

Her words ran like wildfire through his veins, and he raised his head. Where had he heard those words before? There was so much he didn’t remember.

“Who do you believe me to be?” he asked as he twirled her around the room. Envious eyes followed their easy partnership; they seemed to know exactly what the other was going to do.

“Commander Jerrol Haven of the King’s Justice, Captain of the Lady’s Guard and the Keeper of the King’s Oath. My husband. King Benedict misses you, as do we all,” she said quietly, covering as Finn missed a step.

“I think you may be mistaken,” he murmured.

“No.” Her blinding smile faltered. “I’m not. I know you, and you know me, as we always have.”

“My lady. I am Captain Finn of the Third Chevron. This is my first visit to Retarfu, so we can’t have met.”

“Jerrol,” she whispered, her grip convulsing in his hand. “You must remember me, and why we came here.”

Finn searched her face, observing the shine of tears in her brilliant eyes, a hint of fear clouding her expression, and his gut tightened at the thought of upsetting her.

“I am sorry, my lady. I-I suffered an injury, and have lost some of my memories.” He smiled at her. “Though I am sure I could never have forgotten anyone as beautiful as you.”

Taelia stared up at him, her eyes wide with fear, and she bit her lip. “You were hurt? What happened? Are you recovered? Did they look after you?”

Jerrol twirled her around the dance floor, and his gaze flicked around the room, avoiding her anxious face, though he felt warmed by her obvious concern for him. “I would not be on duty if I was not fit,” he reassured her, and she exhaled a shaky breath.

My latest book is the fifth book in the epic fantasy Sentinal series, Sentinals Banished. In Sentinals Banished we are seventeen years ahead of the last book and the children of the main characters from the earlier books have the chance to play their part. Birlerion is stepping out of the shadows and taking centre stage in this book as King Anders banishes all Sentinals from positions of power and from his sight.

As Old Vespers falls into disrepute, it is Birlerion who is left to protect the Sentinals honour and discover what is happening and why. And he needs to find out who is killing innocent people before anyone else goes missing.

I enjoyed writing this book, as Birlerion, a fan favourite, finally steps into the spotlight. He is such a complex character who has stood at Jerrol’s shoulder throughout the series, that it is nice to focus a little bit more on him.

What is your favourite cake?

A light and fluffy sponge cake with cream and jam. Yum!

A Slice of Cake With... Tom Hamling

Today I am delighted to have a slice of cake with children's author Tom Hamling.

Tom lives with his wife and three children in Norwich, UK. He and his wife both write for popular parenting blog See What Mummy Says. Together they have written for brands such as Bickiepegs, INTU Shopping Centres, Wagamamas and have a regular column in Iceni Magazine.

Tom released his first rhyming picture book in 2019. Tom enjoys spending time with friends and family, and loves watching his children play using this to inspire his stories.

What kind of books do you write?

I write short fun stories for younger people which may or may not rhyme with “scripture cooks”. My characters adventure together using imaginative play.

Can you describe your writing why?

I watch my children play using their amazing imaginations and find it incredibly sad how early children seem to lose that ability to transport themselves to another world. I’d love to create a world where children can escape, whenever they need to and that doesn’t rely on any expensive technology.

We put on our helmets
And special space suits
A warm pair of gloves
And big heavy boots

We lay back in our seats
The countdown has begun
The engines are roaring
3...2...1!

Up we go
As high as the stars
We’ve seen Saturn and Venus
And “Look, there’s Mars!”

From Look, There’s Mars!

I currently have three rhyming picture books available from Amazon, Waterstones online and a variety of shops in Norfolk. There are two further books in the series, which are currently being worked on by the wonderful illustrator, Rachel Edwards!

I am currently writing a middle grade adventure novel but its very early in the process so I’m afraid I can’t tell you anything else!

What is your favourite cake?

A man of simple taste, Victoria Sponge is my choice of cake (Must be accompanied by a sugary cup of tea!)

A Slice of Cake With... Jess Kitching

This week I am delighted to be having a slice of cake with Jess Kitching.

Jess is an avid reader, writer and binge-watcher. Originally from Bradford, England, she currently lives in Sydney with her fiancĂ© Jack. Her two goals in life were to move to Australia and have a book published. To be able to say she has done both is something she still can’t wrap her head around.

What kind of books do you write?

I write exciting, fast-paced, twist-filled books with shocking endings that leave readers desperate for someone else to read the book so they can talk to them about it. I’m influenced by writers like Lisa Jewell, Elle Croft, and Gillian Flynn.

Can you describe your writing why?

Writing has always been my biggest passion and the thing I’ve wanted to do with my life. When I was younger, I attended a Jacqueline Wilson author talk and book signing, and it changed my life. Listening to her speak about her craft and where her inspiration came from was a revelation to me. I wanted to create books like hers so badly!

Even though what I write now isn’t in the same genre as her novels, the lessons about creating 3D, imperfect characters, and writing about tricky subjects is something that has stayed with me.

For the storyline of The Girl She Was Before, my inspiration came after doing an interview about my experience of having a facial difference (I have a birthmark on my forehead). I talked about some of the treatment I received and doing so made me think of the impact it has had on me throughout my life. That was the starting point of the storyline of The Girl She Was Before.

Share with us your favourite passage from the book you enjoyed writing the most

This section is from the end of my first chapter. I love this because it really sets up the story and starts it in an intense place, so (hopefully!) from the beginning the reader knows they are in store for an action-packed tale.

With adrenaline coursing through her veins, Hallie glances in the rear-view mirror once more. Headlights shine so close they’re dazzling. White spots dance in her eyes. She winces and turns the steering wheel ever so slightly, but at that speed the slightest movement is all it takes.
The wheels spin out of control as the car hurtles off the road towards the unknown.
There’s a scream, the last thing either woman hears before the sickening crunch of metal rings out into the night. Then… nothing.

The Girl She Was Before explores the lasting impact of a trauma like bullying, toxic friendships and the pressures women are under to be 'perfect'. I wanted to write a book with rounded female characters who weren't 'good' or 'perfect' all the time - as well as a thriller with a wild twist at the end!

On the surface, my main character Nat has it all, but she is crippled with insecurity and anxiety thanks to her teenage experiences. So much of what she does is for others, not herself, and she lives in this heightened state of needing to be perfect. However, when her best friend is murdered and her biggest tormentor returns, that carefully crafted life of hers unravels…

What is your favourite cake?

A classic Victoria Sponge is my favourite! Whenever I go back to visit the UK, I can’t wait to go for an afternoon tea.

A Slice of Cake... Shelley Wilson

This week I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Shelley Wilson.

Shelley is a genre-straddling English author of motivational self-help titles and young adult fantasy fiction. Her sensible side writes non-fiction books to inspire you to survive and thrive, and her cheeky and playful side writes young adult fiction for lovers of the supernatural and kick-ass heroines.

Shelley's passions include writing (obvs!), reading fantasy/horror/post-apocalyptic stories, Tudor and Viking history, visiting castles, eating pizza, and obsessing over to-do lists.

Shelley was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire but raised in Solihull, West Midlands, UK, where she lives with her three grown-up children, one fifteen-year-old fat goldfish and a black cat called Luna.

What kind of books do you write?

Great question. As a multi-genre author, I get to wear two author hats.

Faeries, witches, and werewolves, oh my! My fictional novels are full of creatures, new realms, young characters, and plenty of action (and gore). They explore friendships, first loves, and confidence. Writing for a younger audience is a joy and a responsibility, but no topic is off-limits.

When wearing my other author hat, everything is much calmer. My non-fiction titles set out to motivate, inspire, and entertain readers looking for direction in their lives.

I write about meditation and werewolves, but not in the same book - perhaps I should! ;)

Can you describe your writing why?

The dream to become an author has stayed with me since I was about eight years old. Creating stories and escaping into books made me happy. I saw my name in print in Jackie magazine (remember that!) when I was about thirteen, and I was hooked. It wasn’t until my forties that I took my writing seriously and published my first book.

I continue to write because I love the entire process, even the editing! My fiction continues to be an escape for me and a chance to relive my youth and test myself as a writer. The non-fiction titles I write are my way of helping other people live their best lives. As a domestic abuse survivor, I’m passionate about empowering women, and I can do that through my books.

Drum roll please…

Here’s the Prologue from my next YA novel, due out in May 2022. The Last Princess is my first attempt at including historical fiction in my work. There are no supernatural realms in this book! I adored writing this book and doing the research, and I can’t wait to share it with my readers.

Hundreds of bodies littered the grassland as their lifeblood soaked into the earth. Warriors in mid battle cry lay face down in muddy puddles still clinging to their axe and shield, and the sound of conflict floated across the grey English sky like one of the king’s banners.

In the eyes of the great warriors who had travelled across the sea, the king’s army was outnumbered and weak. These foreigners didn’t shy away from war, they embraced it with determination and passion.

Like a plague, they swept across all England taking what they wanted, killing, and plundering. Nobody was safe from their wrath. Kings and peasants were treated as equals as these warriors from the North defiled the land.

High up on the hilltop a man sat on his horse watching the battle unfold. His eyes scanned the valley as he witnessed soldier after soldier cut down by the vicious army that advanced on his home. He’d sent all his best men to their death. No amount of manipulation, silver, or corruption could stop this curse upon his land.

The crown on his head weighed heavy as he glanced first left then right at the remainder of his army. Young men who stood on the brink of annihilation. The king knew all was lost, he knew the great warriors would never stop, and he knew why.

Deep within the battlefield, at the heart of the fighting, he had seen her. A sword in her hand, blood smeared across her tunic, and warpaint decorating her face. It had been many moons, but he would have recognised her anywhere.

The end of their story was playing out in front of them, but the king wasn’t quite ready to give up just yet. Failure had never been an option.

He sat a little straighter in his saddle and addressed the young army at his side.

‘To the death!’ he cried.

My latest non-fiction title will be published on 2nd December 2021 by BHC Press.

Self-Help for the Helpless is a short non-fiction book aimed at readers who have never come across the idea of self-help before.

For seven years, I ran a ladies-only holistic spa where I worked tirelessly to raise awareness about looking after your needs. Before I left my abusive marriage, I’d never come across the terms self-help or mind, body, spirit before, and yet that section of the bookshop jumped out at me when I needed it the most.

I wanted to share the advice I discovered at the start of my own self-help journey. I think the blurb explains it perfectly:

Have you ever felt helpless? Are you struggling to understand why you feel disconnected from your friends or family? Are you mystified by the words self-help, self-care, and personal development? Are you looking for answers but really have no idea where to begin?

In this beginner’s guide to personal development and understanding self-care, Shelley Wilson will show you how looking after your own needs can be a powerful tool for your mental, physical, and emotional health so you can begin making important changes today.

Discover what self-help means, how to become more self-aware, understand core values, and have fun mapping out what your best life looks like. Shelley includes tips, tools, and techniques and shares her 31-day self-help toolkit.

Be the person you deserve to be and join bestselling self-help author and award-winning personal development blogger Shelley Wilson on a journey of self-discovery.

What is your favourite cake?

Victoria Sponge is the only cake I like. Even though I’ve got a sweet tooth, I rarely have cake, but if I spot a fluffy Victoria Sponge, then I dive straight in!

A Slice of Cake With... Nathan Scammell

Today I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Nathan Scammell.

When Nathan is not sat at his desk writing (or pretending to) he's either playing the Xbox or spending time with the children (watching them play Xbox).

Nathan has released his debut Escape From Arcadia – book one of the Sisters of Fate trilogy and is currently working on the sequel as well as The Universe Under My Bed - an interactive storytelling website for children.

Nathan has previously coached other up and coming authors as well as hosting the Fiction Writers Club on Discord.

What kind of books do you write?

I am currently working on an epic fantasy novel. I post short stories to my blog but they tend to be more psychological thrillers, I love a good twist, so pretty much everything I write has to include a twist big or small.

Can you describe your writing why?

I love writing! I have always wanted to write a novel, I used to work fifty plus hours a week as a supermarket manager and with my children on top of that I never allowed myself the time to write. I was always too tired and I never used my creativity. When Covid struck I thought it was the perfect time to quit my job and try to follow my dream!

Share with us your favourite passage from the book you enjoyed writing the most

This is a scene in my latest book I had so much fun writing:

“Well, tonight will be a lesson for you, my boy.” The dwarf chuckled. “Hurry up.” He said collecting all the empty glasses before going for more. Cad finished the drink as quick as he could. It was harder than the first, but he was enjoying himself none the less.
He could feel his head spinning.

“So you’ve never been drunk before?” Gwen asked.

“No. I know my dad has been a couple of times, but its hard to get enough ale or whisky, and when you do you need to ration it out.”

“Well, the good thing about a tavern.” Said Gwen, “Is that the taps never run dry!”

“Wayyyyyyy.” Shouted Troy as he walked over skillfully holding five glasses of mead at once. “And I am extremely grateful.” He said clinking glasses with Gwen and then Cad. The tavern filled up as the evening went on. Cad and his friends were the loudest by far, and he was loving every minute of it. They danced when the music played, Cad didn’t recognise any of the songs or even the instruments but the beat made him want to get out of his seat and dance, luckily Troy was the first one dancing so he didn’t feel silly, Gwen joined them shortly after.

Escape from Arcadia is an Epic Fantasy that begins in a town sealed off from the rest of the world. Our main character Cadderick has never been outside, no one has, but he has dreamed of it for a very long time. When he does manage to go and see the world, it is very different to what he expected. He is pushed places he doesn’t want to go and finds out more on the history of him and his town that he would have rather remained forgotten.

What is your favourite cake?

Can’t beat a traditional Victoria sponge, although anything with buttercream icing on it is a winner for me.
