This week I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Jamie Krakover.
Growing up with a fascination for space and things that fly, Jamie turned that love into a career as an Aerospace Engineer. Combining her natural enthusiasm for Science Fiction and her love of reading, she now spends a lot of her time writing Middle Grade and Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Jamie lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her husband, Andrew, their son, and their dog, Rogue (named after the X-men, not Star Wars, although she loves both). When she isn't being a Rocket Scientist by day and a writer by night, she can be found catching up on the latest sci-fi TV, books, and movies as well as spending time on Twitter (maybe a little too much time :-P). And no, the rocket science jokes never get old!
Through Snowy Wings Publishing, Jamie is the author of Tracker220 (October 2020). She also has two female in STEM short stories published in the Brave New Girls anthologies and two engineering-centered nonfiction pieces that published in Writer's Digest's Putting the Science in Fiction.
What kind of books do you write?
I write fast-paced, action-packed young adult and middle grade science fiction and fantasy with STEM elements and/or advanced technology and strong female characters who are often Jewish.
Can you describe your writing why?
I’m an aerospace engineer by day, and I love being able to combine my technical background with writing to explore new ideas that frequently start with the question what if. I also enjoy exploring the intersection of my Jewish faith with science fiction and fantasy themes.
Share with us your favourite passage from the book you enjoyed writing the most
This is my favorite chase scene from Tracker220 which takes place at the St. Louis Arch and involves a flying motorcycle and the authorities chasing behind them in single seater helicopters. Enjoy.
As more of downtown came into focus, the unicopters spread out behind us, and the skyscrapers gave way to shorter buildings. Nothing blocked the path between us and them. The engine revved beneath me. We sped toward the Arch. Flying underneath it was illegal—earning you a life sentence—yet we headed straight for it. The steel structure grew steadily larger, tempting us as we approached.
“Are you nuts?” I screamed over the engine. The rider gunned the bike again, and the rumble vibrated through me.
Two unicopters flew in close, flanking us. The agent on our right spoke through the loudspeaker. “Land your vehicle immediately.”
The rider leaned forward on the handlebars and twisted the motorbike, swiping the rear wheel on the steel of the Arch as we passed under it. The unicopter on our right peeled away. The other veered left, but the rotor blade caught on the Arch leg, tearing a gaping hole in it with a sickening crash of metal grinding against metal. The blades lodged in the opening and ripped from the body of the unicopter. It spiraled toward the ground, leaving a trail of smoke in its wake. A fireball erupted on impact. The heat from the blast radiated off my face while we swerved around the smoke plume. We were one wrong turn from becoming a fireball.
“One down, eleven to go.” The rider laughed, the sound distorted through the helmet, then angled the bike at the river.
