A Slice of Cake With... Amanda Brittany
This week I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Amanda Brittany.
Amanda is the best-selling author of five psychological crime thrillers. Her debut, Her Last Lie, has raised almost £8700 for Cancer Research UK from her eBook royalties, in memory of her sister.Amanda lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and cute dog. When she's not writing, she loves spending time with her family and friends, walking her dog, reading & sunny days. She also writes psychological suspense novels with Karen Clarke.
What kind of books do you write?
All my novels are dark, twisty, and creepy. My main character is always a woman, often with issues to resolve in her present-day life and something in the past that puts her in danger in the present. A final twist that will hopefully surprise the reader is a must in my novels.
Can you describe your writing why?
I have loved writing since I was a child, but it was only after a serious car crash that I decided if I was going to attempt to write a novel the time had to be now.
I find writing therapeutic and love the process of the first draft where I get to know my characters.
However, some days my writing mojo vanishes, or the thought of structural edits feels daunting, and those are the times that my writer friends motivate me. Without the support and friendship of other writers, who have shared my ups and downs and I theirs, I would never have written seven novels.

The Island House is mainly seen through a young woman called Alice’s eyes, but it also shines a light on a handful of other characters, one being a child called Tiger, who I absolutely loved writing.
‘I can’t hear anything, sweetie,’ Aunt Verity says, bending down and stroking my cheek. She says this every time I ask her about the tap, tap, tap. ‘You’re imagining things again, Tiger. You have a good imagination, just like your daddy.’
I like it when she says I’m like my daddy.
Maybe it’s the puppets in the attic, I nearly say. But I know I can’t say that because Aunt Verity doesn’t know I go up there to see my puppet friends, and, if she did, she might be cross, and take away the key.
The noise gets louder. Why can’t she hear it?
‘Dinner will be ready in an hour, darling.’ She leaves the room with a wave. ‘I’m going to have a little drink now.’
Tap, tap, tap.

A Slice of Cake With... Jess Kitching
This week I am delighted to be having a slice of cake with Jess Kitching.
Jess is an avid reader, writer and binge-watcher. Originally from Bradford, England, she currently lives in Sydney with her fiancĂ© Jack. Her two goals in life were to move to Australia and have a book published. To be able to say she has done both is something she still can’t wrap her head around. What kind of books do you write?
I write exciting, fast-paced, twist-filled books with shocking endings that leave readers desperate for someone else to read the book so they can talk to them about it. I’m influenced by writers like Lisa Jewell, Elle Croft, and Gillian Flynn.

A Slice of Cake With... Keith Guernsey
Today I am delighted to have a slice of cake with author Keith Guernsey.
Keith D. Guernsey is retired after a 40-year career in sales and sales management with Data General, Cahners Publishing, Motorola, and Comcast. He lives on Lake Lanier with his wife Susan and his four-footed adopted daughter Zoey. He is the author of four popular, successful books. He is a 1976 graduate of Framingham State University. He has just been appointed as a Myeloma Coach. He enjoys reading, writing, and traveling with his family. What kind of books do you write?
I have written four non-fiction books. Confessions of a Beantown Sports Junkie - A fun, light-hearted trip down memory lane. My experiences as a player, coach, and avid fan of all Boston sports. Confessions is a story of my recovery from two rounds of life-threatening brain surgeries to play on three championship softball teams in two states. It is also a story of love and devotion between a son and his father. Fathers and Sons-Sports and Life - A story of an uncommon love and devotion between fathers and sons. It is a story of my recovery from two rounds of life-threatening brain surgeries to play on three championship softball teams in two states. It includes a chapter on the most controversial sports topic of our time; Deflategate. Fathers… is also a sequel to Confessions of a Beantown Sports Junkie. Overcoming the Odds is my story of triumphs over cancer life-threatening brain surgery-twice and morbid obesity! On the Road to Remission is about my year and a half battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Can you describe your writing why?
To leave a legacy for my grandsons and as therapy while I beat cancer (which I have done three times!)

Walking into the BMT waiting room was like walking into a room of gloom. The room was full of my fellow cancer patients. Everyone had a dour expression on their face, behind the masks we were required to wear. We all sat around waiting to be called for our blood work and you could just about hear a pin drop.
It was a privilege to provide some comic relief, albeit unintentionally. You see I had lost another 30 pounds and my clothes were getting very baggy. I heard my name called and jumped right up. As I went up my d$m shorts went down and everyone doubled over with laughter. I quickly pulled them up but the damage was done! Susan said it truly was hysterical - yours truly not so much. Fortunately there wasn't enough time for anyone to pull out their phone and film this faux pas. When I went back, the nurse said my BP was extremely high and she asked if there was a reason for that. I explained what had happened and she did her very best not to laugh. But I'm certain that at the next coffee or lunch break she told this story to all her fellow doctors and nurses and they had a good chuckle.
After slinking embarrassingly out of the office, I went back to the hotel where we were staying to find my belt.
Suffice to say, I have worn it every day since.

Tuesday Poem - Spring Cold
March is the herald of spring
It's also the herald of one other thing
Snotty nose, hacking cough
Hours and hours of feeling rough
Skin is hot but temp is low
Nose too blocked for a proper blow
Head is muzzy and full of cotton wool
Trying to form thoughts but all is dull
Heavy heart, heavy chest, heavy head
Really think I ought to be in bed
As always there's so much to do
It's all going to have to wait in the queue
Today is a day for rest and tea
Maybe a slice of cake just for me
Interspersed with a small plea
To get better as quick as can be

A Slice of Cake With... M.J. Mallon
Her motto is to Do what Your Heart Desires.
And her favourite genre to write is fantasy/magical realism because life should be sprinkled with a liberal dash of extraordinarily imaginative magic!
Her writing credits also include a multi-genre approach: paranormal, best-selling horror, supernatural short stories, flash fiction, and poetry. She has worked with some amazing authors and bloggers compiling an anthology/compilation set during the early stages of COVID-19 entitled This Is Lockdown and a spin off poetry collection, Lockdown Innit.
She’s been blogging for many moons at her blog home Kyrosmagica, (which means Crystal Magic.) where she continues to celebrate the spiritual realm, her love of nature, crystals and all things magical, mystical, and mysterious.
What kind of books do you write?
When I am blending my common ‘ingredients’ I try to incorporate them in an imaginative way as possible! For instance, with my multi-layered teen mystery Bloodstone, short poetic puzzles begin each chapter, and then I explore diverse themes such as mental health, family, vulnerability, entrapment, and twisted fairy tales. Mystery and magic play a crucial part in my writing, and I don’t shy away from difficult topics such as self-harm or mental health, instead, I find new and unusual ways to explore them.
Strange characters are my bread and butter! If you like strange you’ll love Bloodstone. I just love adding a dollop of WHAT THE HECK, giving the reader a moment to digest.
With my shorter pieces of writing - flash fiction and poetry I take a multi-genre approach. So, with Mr. Sagittarius Poetry and Prose, there’s a mix of diverse poetry and short stories which were conceived as separate unrelated pieces but work astoundingly well as a whole in a framed story. In this short but sweet collection, you will also find my own nature photography, imagine a dragonfly, a robin, and a willow tree!
During the pandemic, my writing mojo slumped, I couldn’t find the drive and enthusiasm to continue with my novel so instead, I compiled an anthology with many authors, bloggers, and creatives called This Is Lockdown. Later, I also write a short dark humour visual poetry collection entitled Lockdown Innit Poems About Absurdity.
Halloween is approaching… and yes, I love writing creepy, dark humour stories and have had several of my short stories published in best-selling anthologies.
Can you describe your writing why?
I write because it has become a crucial part of who I am. When I go for a walk, I see stories in the people that I pass in the street, in cafes, museums and art galleries, the same is true. Writing has changed me in the most remarkable and fundamental way. I write because my readers motivate me to do so, there is nothing better than when someone reads your book and loves it. That is the best feeling ever!

From Bloodstone…
I felt a chill creep up my spine. When I searched Dad’s face for some clue to his strange behaviour, I reeled back, struck by the sight of a dull emptiness in his eyes. I couldn’t tear my gaze away from his face. I thought I spotted a weird reflection in his eyes, maybe a bug, or something that flashed for a moment and vanished. Whatever it might have been, it lingered momentarily; a blink of an eye and it disappeared. I wasn’t sure what had happened because no answer transpired. Instead, the features on Dad’s face settled into an unfamiliar stony expression. I shivered at his transformation.
Then I noticed the music in the room had begun to jar my nerves, becoming a cacophony of noise. Dad rushed to open the lid on his record player, grabbing the stylus roughly, causing it to scratch the surface of the record. The screeching grated and sent shivers up my arms.
Dad ended the Charades game by closing the lid of the record player. His face remained grim, and his lips stretched across his mouth in a slash of red. I stayed out of his way and hung back watching, not sure what would happen next.
‘Are you all right?’ Mum asked, reaching out to touch his shoulder. I detected an edge to her voice, a sharp, unfamiliar sound of worry. Her auburn hair appeared to flatten and lose its shape, forming a mask of uncertainty around her cheerful face.
My dad’s immediate reply terrified me. The curve of his mouth turned upside down, and his appearance reminded me of a dejected clown with a mouth covered in a frown of smeared make-up. His expression did more than shock me; it triggered a fountain of tears inside. I shook but reached out to touch his arm. ‘Dad, what’s wrong?’ I asked.
‘Nothing, it’s nothing,’ was all he would say. Mum and I exchanged worried glances.
The candles on my birthday cake, a homemade chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream delight, remained unlit. I gazed at the sweet confection as the ice-cream dripped, forming a multi-coloured puddle, a glossy pastel mess, on the plate.
We should have sung ‘Happy Birthday.’ My voice hung in the air, unanswered.
The room became hot, yet no fire warmed us. A trickle of perspiration formed on Mum’s lip, a tiny moustache of sweat. She frowned and walked unsteadily toward the fireplace. I shivered as Mum added more logs and then re-lit it. The fire roared in the grate, warming the room. I watched as my dad stared into the distance, with unapproachable glassy eyes. My birthday celebration had crashed and burned, and it hadn’t even struck midnight. This had to be a first. My tears hid just below the surface, ready to erupt.
Tell us about your latest project
My latest release is the next in The Curse of Time Series – Book 2 Golden Healer.
Golden Healer continues the story of Amelina, her black cat Shadow and her family and friends. Expect magic, and intrigue from dark and mysterious Ryder, caretaking duties from the creature Eruterac, wisdom from wacky Leanne, (the owner of the magical crystal cottage,) discover the true fate of Esme, (the mirror girl,) and discover news of a terrible rollercoaster… that no one ever wants to have the misfortune to ride!
And this story would not be as enthralling without the Grasshopper of The Corpus Christi Chronophage clock, or the curious antics of the midsummer fly.
What is your favourite cake?
What just one! Oh, no… Black forest gateaux it’s the chocolate and black cherry combo…I fall for it every time!

Tuesday Poem: Flipping Marvellous
Pancakes
Love 'em
This is at least my second ode to them
Round flat cakes of perfection
Flipping out the pan and onto my plate
I like ones with blueberries
With banana and lemon and sugar
With maple syrup, bacon and peanutbutter
(Try it!)
With chocolate and ice cream and oodles of awesomeness
Pancakes!
A cup of flour, a cup of milk and an egg
Bosh
Whisk
Pour
Watch for bubbles and then...
Flip!
Watch perfection soar and somersault in the air
Quivering gently as it lands with a slight sizzle
One for you
Two for me - well I am making them
We don't need an excuse to make them
But we'll use pancake day as a reason to eat them
For Breakfast
And Lunch
And Dinner
Mmmmm fluffy delumptiousness
Eeep! I need lemons! And maple syrup! And eggs!
How is it pancake day already?
