The Never King by James Abbott - 3 stars
Recap: Xavir Argentum, disgraced former leader of the Solar Cohort, imprisoned for the slaughter of innocents, is convinced to break out of jail and destroy those who incarcerated him.
Review: An exciting premise and yet it took me a long time to finish this book. For me the main characters were not that compelling, I had no emotional connections with them. The secondary characters had more warmth and interest for me. The ending was fitting for the character Xavir however it was also spoon-fed throughout the book. The invading Voldiriks were unique but I was left wanting to know much more.
Triumff: Her Majesty's Hero by Dan Abnett - 3 stars
Recap: Sir Rupert Triumff, recently returned from an expedition to Australia, is trying to avoid giving his report and prevent its plunder. He's also being framed for a dastardly plot against the crown.
Review: A neat idea but the plot was a little muddy and I found it hard at times to keep straight what was happening. The prose was humorous in places but felt overwritten in others. The style of a historical novel yet with attempted satire. The fight scenes were well written though and I enjoyed the Mother Grundy character.
